CONSTRUCTION UPDATE
For those of you just hearing about the Amos & Julia Ward Theatre’s “pause”… we are in the process of repairing the lobby floor which collapsed last fall due to water leaks and rotting.
We have hired Vincent Family Construction to make the floor repairs, and to install heating in the two affected bathrooms.
After removing the old floor and cleaning/sealing the concrete slab, the weather went through warming/cooling periods which caused snow/ice melt around the building. Water leaked inside onto the concrete floor near the check-in counter. We also have found rot-through on the sill between the lobby and the exterior - near the southern wall. These discoveries will mean substantial additional repairs.
How you can help us…
We know these repairs will cost much more than our current funds will cover. The initial floor removal and repair alone will cost about $30,000. Donations from the JEMS community have been wonderful so far, but we still have about 50% more to go for the original scope of work, plus an uncertain amount to make these additional repairs.
Any donations you can make to this repair project are greatly appreciated! We will keep you all updated as to the scope and scale of our needs as we move forward.
You can easily donate with the button below or donate by check, made out to JEMS and mailed to: JEMS, PO BOX 150, Jay, NY 12941.
Please know that we MISS you!! We miss seeing you all at the community events, concerts, and contra-dancing that we normally get to be a part of as JEMS board members. We’ve especially enjoyed how much the theatre has become a year-round center of community activities.
Right now, our eye is on the goal of getting the Amos & Julia Ward Theatre up and running again as soon as possible. In the meantime, we are doing what we can with some events/offerings now at other venues:
JEMS JAMS continues every Thursday 7-9pm at the Wells Memorial Library.
We are actively planning post-construction events, as well as the Summer Concert Series - stay tuned!!
The Pardon My French Class has found a nice new home at the Upper Jay Firehouse.
Yes! Your donations will help, and can be made online
